January 22, 2008
CALL TO ORDER: Distributed to attendees: Sign-in sheet, Finance Report, November Minutes
NOVEMBER MINUTES: Minutes approved without revision.
TREASURER’S REPORT: Brenda Bayne – Statement approved without revision. 22 1099s completed covering the clinicians and private lesson instructors. BOA entry fees paid, lots of activity from Winter Guard, money being spent for new music (approved in November and nearly $700 collected in donations).
PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Kim Slade – Recognition of Thomas “Rocky” Rocklin awarded the Chamber of Commerce Volunteer Person of the Year award. Being the webmaster for the Band Boosters is an example of Rocky’s volunteering. To recognize this accomplishment and to show our appreciation, a plaque and restaurant scrip were given to Rocky at the meeting.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT: Mr. Brown reported Jazz band is raising money for new music; a fundraiser started today selling cookie dough and magazine subscriptions. He encouraged students to recognize this as a fundraiser for the Jazz band – specifically. Orders will be collected on January 31st. A parent is needed to coordinate and assist with delivery. Winter Guard is just about ready to kick off their competitive season on Saturday at Turpin High School. Performance time is 7:28 pm – Everyone’s really excited about the show. Also, BOA entry fees have been paid for next year (Massillion on 9/27 and Grand Nationals 11/13-15 in the new dome.) Mr. Schramek joined us, too, reporting on the Committee meetings held with staff and board of ed members in regard to programs and priorities. Mr. Schramek thanked the Boosters for thee financial support for new music and for the registration fees allowing him and Mrs. Everett to attend the OMEA conference here in town next month.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Ways & Means: Kim Haas – Mulch sale’s coming up. Fruit sales were down slightly. We’re still selling bread $10 loaf with $4/fair share.
OMEA: Lisa Cieslewicz – Volunteers and donations are needed! It’s all coming together, but words can’t describe the fun we’re having! Roughly 800 students expected to compete. Volunteers are greatly needed from 7:00 am – 5:00 pm. A walk through will be held Monday at 6:30 pm (January 28).
SCRIP, Krogers, Meijers, Dominos, Panera: Joe Haas – no new report – auto pilot of Scrip program is great! A new feature has been added where you can update your profile. Parents are encouraged to put your child’s name in the area where it’s requesting the teacher’s name. This helps us give correct credit to your kid.
Delegate at Large: Raylene Gerber – No report
Chaperones: Bev and Theresa – No report
Equipment: Bob Slade – Mike Dugoid is pulling the guard trailer this season. Without the Winter Drumline ensemble, Winter Guard goodies can stay in the trailer as needed.
Drumline: Ann Shook – Remember the show is on March 8. We have 32 groups so far (38 last year total) Guard performs first with drumlines performing in the evening. Tri-State website being updated, committee chairs being seated, contracts being signed, concessions being planned, packet coming together for groups that have committed so far.
Guard: Connie Duguid – First performance is this Saturday at Turpin High School. The guard has 10 shows scheduled this season in three circuits. They are in a higher class this year (Scholastic A) February 21 is the parent show. The show is “Singing in the Rain”. A mass email will be sent out about the parent show. We would like to collect donations for the Junior Guard to help strengthen the program. The Junior Guard won’t be competing this season so rehearsals have been cut down to once a week and fees returned to parents. There is an opportunity for the Junior Guard to come in one night a week and warm up with the Senior Guard. Connie’s still the parent supervisor with Dustin and Samantha helping out by writing the drill, teaching the drill, rehearsing the drill. Connie discussed the possibility of a Michigan trip on February 8 and returning on February 9th. She anticipated $3000 would be needed to cover transportation expenses for charter bus and equipment trailer, and ask the Boosters to support this trip. A motion was made, seconded, and approved by the members in attendance.
Membership: Julia Foster – No report
Marching Band Uniforms: Kathy Christopher reported that they still need to be laundered. She didn’t want to ask for volunteers to launder uniforms over the holidays, but volunteers are needed now.
Concert Band Uniforms: Sue Hayes reported that we still need tux jackets for our smaller members - $100 needed for 5 jackets. Sliders are here and being replaced.
Senior Committee: Susan Sferra – No report
BOA: Tim Gerber – No report
Hospitality/Refreshments: No report
Publicity: Gary Presley – No report
Old Business/Unfinished Business:
New Business: Wendy Lambing brought up the concern regarding volunteer hours being ineligible to claimed as approved senior hours. Mr. Brown reported that he had been unaware of the changes to the eligibility restrictions enforced for this year until this issue came up earlier in the month. However, he has been able to secure the approval of up to 4 hours of service to those seniors who work the upcoming OMEA event.
This is good news, but there’s an overarching concern that volunteer hours worked for Booster supported activities are not approved as eligible. A meeting with Mr. Brown, Dr. Bauer, and parent volunteers will be scheduled to discuss this further. Interested parents can email Wendy if you wish to participate in the meeting.
The Nominating Committee has been appointed and recruiting has begun for next year’s plans. They include Tim, Brenda and Wendy. Parents interested in taking a leadership role in the Boosters Association are encouraged to contact one of the committee members.
