MILFORD BAND BOOSTER MEETING AGENDA
APRIL 24, 2007
CALL TO ORDER: Sign in sheet
MARCH MINUTES: Accepted without revision
TREASURER’S REPORT: Accepted without revision
PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Wow, what a conclusion to our Winter programs. The Guard finished FIRST in the Mid-States circuit in class A2 and our Drumline finished THIRD in Open competition in MEPA (only .35 points behind 2nd place) – CONGRATULATIONS! Drumline competed April 19th in WGI Championships at the Nutter Center. This was their toughest competition with ensembles from California to Massachusetts competiting. They had a great show and enjoyed watching the other groups. A big thank you to all of the parent volunteers that helped with these programs: moms sewing flags, chaperones, prop/equipment construction (Bob), equipment drivers (Bob and Steve), Guard Mom (Amy), Drumline Mom (Cathy), PIT boss (Harry) and our PIT crew. We couldn’t offer these programs without your continued support! Also, a huge thank you to our winter directors and instructors for their time, talent, dedication, and helpfulness who have always been there for our students: Drew Steinbrecher, Megan Iles, Eric Kraft, Andy Schible, Andrew Markworth, and Sarah Haines. Lasty, thank you to our Junior Guard Instructors: Molly Bain, Lindsey Garrison, Dustin Hughes, and Leah Sence. You did a great job and our Junior Guard had a great introduction to our program.
DIRECTORS’ REPORTS:
Mr. Brown
Mr. Schrameck – The directors are very proud of the accomplishments of our Winter programs and they’re excited about the future! Again, thank you to the parents that have volunteered for all of these programs. Considering March 8 or 15 for next year’s Winter Show at Milford. Jr Hi Solo/Ensembles were this past weekend and all of the kids did a great job. Friday, May 11th will be the District XIV Jr Hi contest and the 7th grade band will perform at 4:00 pm at Anderson High School. Chaperones will be needed to cover 3 buses of 7th graders (9-12 chaperones needed). Chaperones needed, too, for the Spring Concert (May 17). The Exploratory Music Ensemble (6th grade) is facing challenges with the late start, less than 50 students involved, but we’re optimistic that this smaller group will continue to the 7th grade band. Happily, the 6th Grade Band program will begin again next year. We have 98 students involved in this year’s 7th grade band and hope many will move with us into the 8th grade band next year.
Ms. Towner – Needed a volunteer to type the program for the May concert - Patty Tanksley volunteered.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Ways and Means:
Mulch Sale – Jenna Atkinson – Very successful campaign this year. Adult volunteers are needed this Saturday, too, starting about 8:00 am to assist with delivery. We had 78 students participate selling over 5000 bags of mulch! The Hospitality Committee would love to have some baked goods donated, as well as the use of personal crockpots. Donated baked goods may be dropped off at the Band Room on Friday, or brought to Mayan Sun on Saturday.
Buy It In Milford Books – Bev Pineault reminds us that the books are a great way to get some fair share dollars – each $20 book gets you $8 in fair share. The $10 card gets you $5 on Fair Share. McDonalds, Great Escape, lots of good coupons that can be used all year. The books will be available for sale at the Spring Concert (May 17)
Yards Signs/Alumni Donations – Lisa Hilderbrand
Grants and MBB Capital Campaign – Lisa Cieslewicz – Moving along, Kroger and Target grants submitted, but it could take months to hear back…. Also hitting up the larger family foundations involved with education or fine arts.
Coney Island – Ann Shook has found a contact so we can work and make some fair share dollars at the Flower Show with possibly future events coming our way.
SCRIP, KROGERS, MEIJERS, DOMINOS, PANERA, MAX & ERMA’S/TEXAS ROADHOUSE & CAR WASHES:
Joe and Kim Haas – We’re going to start keeping $1 Kroger cards available for quick sale and convenience. Scrip can now be ordered online – go in and register your family, print off a copy of the order along with a check and send it in to Kim. Online ordering can be submitted, too, with special offers available at times. We’d love to get more folks into the Scrips program, and we can send out an email with instructions. Car Washes at Water Works is coming up on May 12th. Max & Erma’s next band night is May 30th. Tentatively scheduling car washes at Wal-Mart for June 2 and June 30. A bake sale being considered, too, for the washes if anyone is interested in helping coordinate that. Laser Web overnight coming up on August 3 (11pm to 6am) with a partnership invitation being extended to Beechwood (KY) band, too. Consider volunteering to help Kim and Joe pull off this new venture! Buddy cards will be available for sale in the last two weeks of July and the first two weeks of August. Remember, you can make $4 on each Buddy card sold. Papa John’s (SR 28 location only) hosts a Milford Band Night every Wednesday with 20% of sales going to our Booster’s – Signage to be requested. We are bagging groceries at Bigg’s (Skytop) on 5/5, 6/10, and 6/24. There are a few spots left open if anyone is interested.
DELEGATE AT LARGE: Teresa Essex
The BOE had a work session on April 16th and is examining a reduction of 50% of the band/athletics participation fee and the addition of a part-time 6th grade band instructor. According to John Frye they should have a definitive answer on this within the next couple weeks. John stated the Board had previously taken 5 MIL out of the budget and are proposing putting 1.7 MIL back.
CHAPERONES: Teresa Wandstrat and Kim Haas – gearing up for Band Camp already!
EQUIPMENT: Bob Slade – We will need parent volunteers with trucks who are willing to put airbrakes on their trucks and pull a trailer. Depending on potential growth, we may need another trailer – which translates to more drivers could be needed. Remember, we do this for our kids, so PLEASE contact me if you would be willing to help out.
DRUMLINE: Cathy Evans – On April 19, our Drumline competed in the WGI National Finals. We placed 23/37 in Open Class. The Drumline this year was the youngest due to losing 8 seniors last year. The program was very sophisticated and technical and they did very well. We will be having the annual end of year Drumline party where we will welcome the 8th grade percussionists into the program. The date of the event is to be determined.
GUARD: Amy Bain – Auditions have been held and practice for next year is underway.
MEMBERSHIP: Julia Foster – no report
MARCHING UNIFORMS - Kathy Christopher – They’re clean, need to be re-ordered as soon as we can get in there to prepare for fall.
CONCERT UNIFORMS – Laura Bauscher – Sue Hayes will take over for me next year. Tuxedos can be used by our male students who wish to wear them to Prom. We’ll have signout sheet on May 16th when students can pickup their tuxedos. However, we need to make sure all tuxes borrowed will be returned by the Band Banquet on May 22.
SENIOR COMMITTEE: Ramona Fisch
Cedar Point Trip – All monies are due by April 30th including any outstanding band fees. May 23 – 25 is the trip!
BOA: Tim Gerber – No report, no changes.
HOSPITALITY/REFRESHMENTS: Robyn Carroll and Cindy Bachman
Cookie donations are needed for the mulch sale (bring to the band room Friday afternoon or to Mayan Sun on Saturday morning) and the spring band concert.
PUBLICITY: Sue Thiele
OLD BUSINESS/UNFINISHED BUSINESS: A belated thank you to Kathy Christopher for the outstanding job she did on the programs for our winter show! We have mailed a copy to each of our $500+ business supporters with another thank you letter for their support. Banquet info from Connie Duguid – all going well and invitations went out today! Remember, the banquet will be on May 22nd, and Ann Shook will be calling folks to volunteer to work. Pictures are still being collected by Susan Sloan for the slide show we’ll view after the banquet.
Tonight we voted on our slate of Nominated Officers:
Co-Presidents: Kim Slade and Mike Carroll (running as a team)
VP/Ways and Means: Kim Haas
VP/BOA: Tim Gerber
VP/Guard: Connie Duguid
VP/Drumline: Lisa Cieslewicz and Ann Shook (running as a team)
Secretary: Wendy Lambing
Treasurer: Brenda Bayne
Delegate at Large: Raylene Gerber (Theresa Essex has withdrawn her name since someone stepped up to take over this role.)
We still need some volunteers for committee chairs: Senior Committee, Telephone Chain and Food/Local Contests. Also, we have a parent that has agreed to do Hospitality but would like a co-chairman – anyone interested? Contact Patti/Steve, or Kim/Mike if you’re interested.
NEW BUSINESS: We spoke with Mike from FJM Company and asked them to create a sample of the raincoat we would like to order. Mike was able to order this from the manufacturer at no charge and we hope to have it for the May meeting. A committee was formed earlier this month to review and audit the Treasurer’s accounts. The committee was Tim Gerber, Wendy and Stuart Lambing, Kim and Bob Slade, and our accountant. All questions were answered and everything was found to be in order.
