MILFORD BAND BOOSTER MEETING MINUTES
JANUARY 23, 2007
CALL TO ORDER: Sign in sheet
NOVEMBER MINUTES: Correction - Joe Haas did not install the light in the shed, Bob Slade did. Addition - Thanks to Susan Sloan for taking minutes in our secretary’s absence.
TREASURER’S REPORT: Brenda Bayne reported both December and January figures on the P&L since we didn’t have a meeting in December. Report accepted without changes.
PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Patti reported “Welcome back and Happy New Year!” It’s been a long time since our last meeting and we’ve had lots of activity in the Band Program. Congratulations extended to those that participated in District XIV and Land of Grant Honor Bands. Milford was VERY WELL REPRESENTED! The Junior High and High School Holiday Concerts were Great! We have a talented bunch of students!
DIRECTORS’ REPORTS:
Ms. Towner reports honor bands were outstanding – especially District XIV which she called “phenomenal”. Ms. Towner mentioned there is concern with the LOG program being able to continue due to varying levels of participation from other schools. January 27th is the Solo/Ensemble contest at Princeton. It’s an all day affair with stages in classrooms and adjudication scheduled in 8 minute intervals. She encourages all members to come to the recital concert on Thursday night starting at 7:00 pm – should only last about an hour, but gives participating students an opportunity to perform for an audience prior to Saturday. OMEA high school band contest is scheduled for March 16/17. Mrs. Towner reports that they have requested a Friday afternoon/evening time slot to avoid conflict with a Winter Guard competition on Saturday. We won’t know actual times until it’s closer to the event.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Ways and Means: Susan Sferra has stepped down as V.P. of Ways and Means. Lisa Cieslewicz has been appointed to replace Susan for the remainder of the year. Thank you, Susan, for all of your hard work this past year! And, thank you Lisa for taking the lead for the rest of this year!
Mulch Sale and Breadsmith Fundraiser-Susan Sferra and Joel Wegenner, from Breadsmiths presented a new fundraising idea and samples to sell for fair share. In addition to the bread as sold earlier in the year, frozen cookie bricks, salsa, barbeque and spaghetti sauce will be available for sale. We will coordinate this with the mulch sale so the kids could be selling mulch and munchies at the same time. Sale to begin February 23 and end March 9th. Delivery of the bread items on March 23 from 6-8 pm. Mulch pickup is tentatively scheduled for April 14 or 28.
Fruit Sale – Susan reported no complaints given to her on the fruit sale.
Mulch Sale – Jenna Atkinson has volunteered to chair this fundraiser again, and she would like volunteers to help photocopy maps and prepare delivery routes. Bob Slade asked the group to acknowledge Jenna’s 40 – 60 hours of volunteer time in setting up and to consider helping her out with this very important task.
Yards Signs/Alumni Donations – Lisa Hilderbrand - We still have many signs to sell. Ms. Towner suggested they could be available to the 8th grade parents during their info session that will be held in the latter part of February. Additionally, they could possibly be available for sale at the March Winds Concert. Grants and MBB Capital Campaign – Lisa Cieslewicz reported that we have compiled a list of area businesses that we would like to send donation letters to and are looking for volunteers to verify the accuracy of our information prior to the letters being mailed. We’re hoping to raise $16K for raincoats, $9K for related equipment repairs and $25K for new instruments.
SCRIP, KROGERS, MEIJERS, DOMINOS, PANERA: Kim Haas presented a new fundraising idea of a pancake breakfast. She found a company that can serve 200 people/hr for $3.95/head. Think about it and bring ideas to the February meeting. Max & Erma’s has committed to fundraiser on February 28th with 20% of our dinner receipts going to the Boosters. Scrip is available for Max & Erma with 13% going towards Fair Share.
DELEGATE AT LARGE: Reporting for Teresa Essex, Patti mentioned that Brian Brown and the Milford High School Marching Band were congratulated on December 21, 2006 at the Milford Board of Education meeting for making semi-finals at BOA Grand Nationals.
CHAPERONES: Teresa Wandstrat and Kim Haas – no report
EQUIPMENT: Bob Slade – Trailers were moved – no, they’re not missing – we know where they are!
DRUMLINE: Cathy Evans – Drumline has the music now and the next competition is February 3 at Central Crossing. Our Winter Guard & Percussion show is March 10th. We are still looking for Baked Good donations, drumline checkin, and student volunteer recruiter. Cathy will meet with the kids to speak about the show, the baskets, and the volunteer needs. She will have a signup sheet for them at that meeting. Descriptions of primary assignments are available. If you haven’t volunteered yet, sign up. You can be recruited for something. Also, we’re looking for volunteers to prepare the meat – pulled pork and chili. Contact Patti or Cathy if you would like to volunteer to cook for the show! Related to other volunteers, additional volunteers can sign up for the pit crew. Contact Cathy if you’d like to volunteer to work pit crew.
GUARD: Amy Bain – Flag sewers will be needed soon, so contact Amy if you can volunteer any time. They’ll be working in the evenings again as they did for Marching Band. Many hands make light work!
MEMBERSHIP: Julia Foster – no report
MARCHING UNIFORMS - Kathy Christopher reports that we will sell the old marching uniforms for $25 each with them offered to our current Juniors and Seniors first. The remainder to be available for sale at our Winter Show. Old parkas are ready to be discarded and will be donated to the Free Store.
CONCERT UNIFORMS – Laura Bauscher – no report
SENIOR COMMITTEE: Ramona Fisch – no report
BOA: Tim Gerber – no report
HOSPITALITY/REFRESHMENTS: Robyn Carroll and Cindy Bachman – Breakfast & lunch served at fruit sale – all went well!
PUBLICITY: Sue Thiele – Saturday before Christmas the Tuba Christmas made the Hometown section of the Enquirer. The Enquirer will be contacted to see if a photographer could come out and snap some photos of our March 10th competition.
OLD BUSINESS/UNFINISHED BUSINESS: We have limited information from John Frye as to how we will be affected by the upcoming emergency school levy. If the levy passes, we will retain all three band directors, receive the same funding we received this year (approximately $20,000), and have 6th grade band reinstated. We will still be responsible for transportation expenses and a $250 participation fee per marching band student. If the levy does not pass, one band director will be reassigned, 6th grade band will not be reinstated, and we have no idea what if any funding band will receive.
NEW BUSINESS: We received a very nice thank you letter from Michelle Sanchez that was passed around. Steve and Patti were acknowledged by Miami Glen at their annual awards ceremony and given a $100 donation for band. Miami Glen invited the Band Boosters to join their organization. Their membership fee is $35 and they will donate back to band $10 for each booster membership. They asked us to help sell tickets for a Wine Tasting Fundraiser (to be held in the spring) and they will donate half of the profits to Milford Band.
