Milford Band Booster Minutes

 October 24, 2006

CALL TO ORDER:  Sign in sheet.

SEPTEMBER MINUTES:  Minutes approved without revision.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Brenda Bayne - The flutes won the Buddy card challenge earning themselves a Pizza Party!  New credits reflect our prize winnings from the Anderson Competition ($150 for 2nd place) and the proceeds from the Steamin’ Joe’s sales at the five home football games totaling $1820.52.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Steve Howes and Patti Holshouser – The band had a great first performance in Youngstown despite the weather and some minor mishaps.  They made finals but were unable to participate due to a huge thunderstorm.  It was a miserable days weather-wise but the kids (and parents) were troopers through it all.  Beechwood was another great show with the band making finals and finishing 5th overall.  Congratulations to our Guard for earning top honors in our class!!!  Anderson was a fun show with Milford finishing 2nd overall as Reserve Grand Champions and earning a Superior rating.  A big thank you to all of the parents that have volunteered as chaperones, PIT crew, uniform moms and dinner volunteers.  We couldn’t do it without you!  Also a big thank you to Chipotle for their support of our Anderson dinner.  They donated approximately $500 towards that dinner!

Guests for the meeting:

Charlie Lewis from GFS.  GFS is one of our corporate partners this year.  Charlie was here to speak with us about fund raising opportunities for the spring and into 2007 marching season.    GFS has two fundraising opportunities for us.  The first, “Fun funds”, tallies up the purchases made at GFS (in a given quarter) by our registered members and credits back a varying % towards each account.  There is no fee to shop in their stores. The Band needs to spend $500/quarter to earn 5% back, but the percentage rebated increases as the spending for that quarter increases.  “Ala Carte” items available for fund raising – sell pies – we determine profit (roughly $5 pie).  Double-dipping is possible by doing “Ala Carte” plus Fun Funds – allowing us to double our profits for that fund raiser.

Todd Munroe is the Levy Chairperson for this year’s Operating Levy.  The Boosters are hosting Todd to inform you about the Levy so you can make a sound choice in the election booth on November 7th.  Todd is not being paid for his efforts as Levy Chairperson; he just feels a personal commitment to his kids and his school.   The outcome of the Levy will have a significant impact on our Band program.  If the Levy fails to pass, we will lose one director and see a dramatic increase in our fees.  Bottom line of presentation – Do we value our schools?  Check out the website www.4milford.com for details.    If the Levy passes, a typical $200K home in Miami Township will pay $30 more a month in taxes.

DIRECTOR’S REPORTS:  Mr. Schrameck reported on behalf of the three directors.  They wish to thank everyone for their work on the contests.  He went on to say they are very proud of the kids and the show is only getting better and better.  Mr. Schrameck warns us that Colerain is late – with the awards beginning at 10:45 pm, the band won’t get back to the High School until around midnight.  Parking at this contest is going to be an issue as this will be a large show – almost 30 bands performing.  We play at 9:00 pm.  The kids should eat lunch before they arrive; Ms. Tompkins and her crew are cooking pasta dinners.  Mr. Schrameck said the directors are still sketching out the details for the Indy/BOA trip, but it looks like the kids will report to the Band Room on Thursday (11/9) at 7:00 am, returning Saturday evening at roughly 8:00 pm.  His final comments were that things are going well at the junior high with about 50 8th graders and 107 7th graders participating in the Band Program.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Ways & Means – Susan Sferra – We have received a $500 donation from Calderhead Law Office.  We received $75 from LaRosas and a $25 business donation from Parker Cowgill (Park Homes).  In addition, a check for $1952 will be coming from the volunteer efforts made at Tall Stacks.  The Fruit Sale begins 11/13 when order packets will be distributed to the kids and will be due back on 11/27.  Call Susan 831-7233 if you can help with the Fruit Sale.  New this year, a spreadsheet will be included in the packet to indicate the credit earned for each item.  ButterBreads, Jerry’s cheesecakes, and poinsettias will be sold, too.  Delivery will be on December 9th at the High School.  All details will be forthcoming.

McDonalds; dinner will be at Old Country Buffet.  A hot breakfast buffet has been finalized for Friday brunch.  Hard Rock Café has been finalized for Friday dinner.  The 40 students attending the leadership workshop will have an early Friday dinner at the Old Spaghetti Factory.  Saturday morning breakfast will be muffins, fruit, and juice, and box dinners will be provided by Chick-fil-A in Indy as the students board the buses to return home. Students will be on their own for lunch in the dome.  Be sure your child packs a bathing suit to enjoy the water park at the hotel.

Encouragement Posters will be hung on Monday, November 6th – after the exhibition show and before Senior Night begins.  This is a huge deal to the kids, so please take time to make a poster.   Contact a Boosters Officer if you have any questions about the posters.

Hospitality/Refreshments: Robyn Carroll and Cindy Bachman – Thanks everyone for the donations.  The donuts were a big hit at this last game!  Goodie bags will be made for the Indy trip, so look for an email requesting donations.

Publicity: Sue Thiele – Last week’s Milford Advertiser had a picture about Youngstown.  Be sure to check the Hometown Enquirer insert each Thursday/Saturday in the Cincinnati Enquirer.    Professional photos can be ordered from the Anderson contest at www.glutzphotography.com  Click on candid to see events listing, and then click on Milford.

Old Business/Unfinished Business:  Tag Day is still on and is to be held on November 4th.  Limited to the two Kroger’s in Milford, our students will perform outside of each Kroger’s store for donations.  Students who can perform will meet at Kroger’s at 9:15 am, begin playing at 9:30, and will play until 3:00.  Logistics will be arranged but transportation will be on our own.  Field Commander Matt Howes will coordinate the signup with students.  Buckets will be provided for money donations.  Parent volunteers will be needed.  Pizza and pop will be provided for lunch.  We hope to get something in the paper to promote.  Band jackets will be the uniform of the day (too close to Indy to wear uniforms).

New Business: Miami Glen is continuing to look for ways to support us.  Another $250 check was given to MBB to kick off the capital drive for pit equipment.  Remember, there is a dance Saturday, November 4th.  Music will be by the Pete Wagner Band, at Milford Fire Fighters Hall.  $12.00 per person.  There will be a Silent Auction.  BYOB.  Contact Steve Howes if you’d like to purchase tickets to the dance.

Steamin’ Joes will be serving hot drinks the weekend following Thanksgiving at the Home in Milford Celebration in Old Milford.  Volunteers needed!  Please contact Biz Goldman if you can volunteer a couple hours that weekend  (248-9991)  The amount of Steamin’ Joes’ donation to the band will be determined by the number of volunteers and the gross sales.  After Prom is selling pies as a fund raiser.  You can purchase a pie and donate it to the Mary Miller Fund, thus supporting both After Prom and the Mary Miller Fund.  Please contact Patti Holshouser (Pholsho326@aol.com) for an order form if interested.

Next Meeting:   November 28th

Respectfully submitted,

Band Booster Secretary
